MIKA KWIECINSKI
Mika Kwiecinski is a freestyle dancer and Bachata instructor born and raised in Toronto, Ontario.
Prior to dancing and teaching Bachata, Mika trained as a concert pianist for over 11 years. This background in music theory gave him a headstart in understanding the different rhythms and musicality in Bachata music.
His dance education outside of Bachata is in street styles such as Hip-Hop and Popping. Popping and the sub-genres of “Animation” and “Waving” are large influences on Mika’s fusion style of Bachata. He has found that through “Waving”, one develops the highest level of body-control, and that through “Animation”, one is able to develop their understanding of what it means to move in a 3D space.
Mika is an expert in human anatomy, flexibility, and body alignment. Since leading involves directing and altering the physical alignment of one’s own body and their partners, it is essential that a Lead understands what correct alignment is. Mika’s understanding of alignment comes from hundreds of hours studying and practicing Yoga, and over 10 years studying martial arts such as Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu and Wing-chun. Mika has also spent an equal amount of time studying the science of flexibility, and has taken courses in mobility and contortion.
In late 2022, Mika met Kaia, and she became an indispensible part of his life, in and outside of dance. Her knowledge of the performance arts as well as classical dance training, was the perfect compliment to his street-based dance philosophy. Together they have created a freestyle Bachata Fusion and hope to fundamentally change partnerdancing as a whole.
As a teacher Mika is patient, disciplined and enthusiastic. His goal as a teacher is to show his students that through correct technique, one can reach the highest level of self-expression in a dance.
